The concert, the most recent of the high-energy performer’s International
Blues shows to play the Peninsula, will stream online on Saturday, April
24, at 7 p.m.
Occasion for re-streaming the concert is the retirement of Oxford,
originally from Chicago, but latterly based in Seattle, from all aspects of
the music business on April 1.
In announcing his decision to retire, Oxford said an enforced absence from
music due to COVID-19 quarantining had led to some soul-searching, and a
decision that it was time to step away from the spotlight.
In his four-decade career, the dynamic entertainer recorded many CDs, and
performed concerts across the U.S., Canada and Central America.
Among career highlights were playing the International Blue Challenge in
Memphis, and winning over 20 Washington Blues Society Best of the Blues
awards, including entertainer of the year, and being elected to the WBS’
Hall of Fame. He also founded the Mountain Rhythm and Blues Festival in
Ashford, Washington.
Joining Oxford in the concert is noted South Surrey guitarist and show host
Jon Gale; South Surrey keyboardist Jim Widdifield; fellow Surrey singer
Tambalena and Vancouver bassist Bruce O’Neill; and a truly international
line-up including Seattle drummer Chip Hart; Tacoma vocalist Miranda
Kichpanich; Mexican-born guitarist Rafael Tranquillino; and Russian-born
guitarist Arsen Shomakov.

Dallas International Guitar Festival Returns April 30
(DALLAS, TX)- The world’s largest and oldest guitar show, Dallas
International Guitar Festival (DIGF) is back at Dallas Market Hall (2200
Stemmons Freeway) April 30-May 2. DIGF hours are noon-7pm Friday; 10am-7pm
Saturday; and 10am-6pm Sunday. There’s continuous music throughout the
festival, with two outdoor stages. Free parking for those attending the
show.
The Festival draws musicians, fans, collectors and celebrities from around
the world. Visitors can buy, sell, trade, or browse among thousands of new
and vintage guitars. Vendors also feature basses, amps, banjos, mandolins,
straps and strings, effects pedals, keyboards, music memorabilia and more.
There are hundreds of booths and exhibits, where guests can meet guitar
legends and up-and-coming artists, or get tips at instructional clinics.
See live performances by more than 60 local, regional and national artists.
Concert headliners include multi-award-winning Blues guitarist and
singer/songwriter Samantha Fish, who performs Sunday, singer/songwriter,
multi-instrumentalist Celisse Henderson, Frank Hannon from Tesla, George
Lynch, and Mark Lettieri from Snarky Puppy (winner of 2021 Grammy award for
Best Contemporary Instrumental Album) are also featured headliners.
Girls of Guitar perform Friday, and feature Celisse Henderson, Joanna
Connor, Ana Popovic, Kara Grainger, and Ally Venable.
DIGF performers also include Randy Hansen, Josh Smith, Larry Mitchell,
Rocky Athas, Jason Elmore, Jerry Don Branch, Robert Miller, Reece Malone,
Billy the Kid, Johnny Red, and The Boogie Men. Maylee Thomas, Jim Suhler,
Chris Rodriguez, Kevin McKendree, Kayla Reeves, Joshua Valdes, Jesse
Spradlin, Rockin Robert T, Cold Stone Sweat, and Jimmy Wallace also
perform, along with many others.
The Texas 10 under 20 stage features musicians or bands with members under
20 years old on Friday. The 10 under 20 contest finalists perform in a live
showcase on Sunday.

Soul Survivor and Blues Song Man Curtis Salgado is in control
...The blues is a mighty life force with infinite expressiveness and a
mystical ability to travel effortlessly across distance and time, race and
class. It’s also the story of America, something [Curtis] Salgado
understood intuitively, beyond his infatuation with the sound and feel of
the music. After hearing a few records, and especially after seeing the
Count Basie Band as a kid, he wanted to know everything. He wanted to live
the life. And as you’ll hear in Episode 165 of The String, he’s done that
and more, touring the world, beating back two forms of cancer, and winning
nine Blues Foundation awards, including the B.B. King Entertainer of the
Year prize in 2013.
Our conversation visits several key moments in his journey. Scene one. A
kid in an overwhelmingly white town learns about racism from his father’s
record collection:
*“He had Bunk Johnson. He had Bix Beiderbecke. He had Louis Armstrong. He
loved Ray Charles. On the back of one of these records, it said that Count
Basie had to enter Carnegie Hall through the back door at one of the
biggest, most influential concerts of all time (From Spirituals To Swing,
1938-39). And I remember going what, why is that? Why? My hero! I had no
idea. I'm in Eugene, Oregon. Count Basie has to go through the back door at
Carnegie Hall? That's crazy. And I couldn't get it together. And of course,
you know, it's layers of the onion. As time goes on, you learn more.”*
Scene two. By his mid-twenties, Salgado is working the region in a band
with fellow emerging artist Robert Cray. One night, Saturday Night Live
actor John Belushi wanders into their bar, blowing off steam from filming
Animal House, and has his mind blown by the band and by Salgado’s harmonica
playing. He demands to meet Salgado.

Crown jewel of New Jersey blues clubs to reopen
(STANHOPE, NJ) - The Stanhope House

is widely considered the crown jewel of New Jersey blues clubs. It’s a
roadhouse-style musical museum whose memorabilia-adorned walls are
flashbacks to the days when icons performed there. It’s a 1790s building
that was once also a private home, stagecoach stop, general store, post
office, tavern, rooming house, and hotel. It’s a melodic gem that suffered
a near-death experience when the pandemic threatened to close it for good.
But that’s not going to happen. The Stanhope House is alive and well and
reopening on Thursday, April 15. The music will play on thanks to a
GoFundMe page that raised $9,000 toward a $10,000 goal, other online
fundraisers, and live outdoor performances before the weather turned cold.
“The Stanhope House has hosted everyone from blues legends and Rock and
Roll Hall of Famers, to locals playing at open-mic nights,” said spokesman
Tom Skevin. “And legend has it that Babe Ruth drank there.”
The Skylands Songwriters Guild will host an open mic for its soft reopening
on April 15. “The open mics will continue every Thursday starting at 4
p.m.,” Skevin said. “The great thing about them is that anybody and
everybody is welcome to sing, dance, or just strut their stuff.” There is
no charge for this weekly event.
The hard opening will be held Sunday, April 18, in the beer garden. It will
feature the Wig Party band, with special guest Tim Carbone of the band
Railroad Earth, Skevin said.
Tickets for this and other upcoming musical events can be purchased online
or at the door.
“Due to state-mandated capacity levels, for now the Stanhope House will be
open for outdoor events only,” Skevin said, “But this could change

Mick Kolassa :: IF YOU CAN’T BE GOOD BE GOOD AT IT
*If You Can’t be Good Be Good At It is *produced by Mick Kolassa aka
Michissippi Mick and Jeff Jensen and features a diverse collection of songs
and brings together a group of musical friends – a group that only Memphis
and the surrounding areas can provide.
The album opens with “I Can’t Help Myself,” an R&B love song that is
Memphis through and through, followed by Mick’s “uncover” of James Taylor’s
“Lo and Behold.” Title track, “If You Can’t Be Good, Be Good At It” is a
phrase Mick often uses at the end of a conversation.
“Good Day For The Blues” is powerful, slow, minor blues; “I’ve Seen” has
Mick singing about what he has seen and what he most wants to see; “We
Gotta,” Mick invites his lady friend to chase the stars and close down bars
– soon. “Sweet Tea,” a Mid-South favorite, is this track’s inspiration.
“Slow and Easy Love” is another slow, minor blues which is popular with the
ladies at Mick’s live shows. “Good Night Irene” (no, not that one) is for a
DJ friend from Down Under.
Howlin’ Wolf’s classic “Who’s Been Talking,” includes Mick’s very special
friend, Blues Brother Willie “Too Big” Hall, on drums.
The album closes with “She Kept Her Head Up,” a song wrote for and about
his daughter, Kassi, and her battle with breast cancer. It isn’t blues, but
that doesn’t matter.
This album is meant to be fun and sad, to take you up and down and back up,
and to give you plenty of reasons to go back and listen a few more times.
If You Can’t be Good Be Good At It is a labor of love; 100% of net proceeds
go to The Blues Foundation, split between two important programs: the HART
Fund and Generation Blues.
