Letters: Why support for Ukraine is essential to stopping nuclear
proliferation

Jan. 2, 2023

A Russian military convoy is seen on the road toward the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear
Power Station in Southeastern Ukraine on May. 1, 2022.
Associated Press
Regarding “The More Serious Threat”

 (Letters, SFChronicle.com <http://sfchronicle.com/>, Dec. 28): While I agree
China is a bigger threat than Russia, the moral equation and the strategic
implications of providing aid to Ukraine are much more complex than the
author suggests.

In 1994, Ukraine agreed to deliver the nuclear arsenal inherited from the
collapse of the Soviet Union to the U.S. in exchange for financial support
and, most importantly, security guarantees. If the U.S. fails to keep its
security promises to Ukraine, that will just be another example supporting
nuclear arms proliferation.
