Terrific video from S.F. on Feb 28; I did not know that they had shut down
ICE building that day. Important participation from head of SF AFL/CIO
president and participation of AFSCME local and Unite-Here. Do we know who
the woman was who described herself as "an interpreter" and gave a pretty
long radical speech (a little social-patriotic at the end, though). A very
good speech attacking the Democrats as well.
This plus the Korea town protests may spark nationwide resistance. I'll
put this material out to my teacher groups.

In SF, the action against ICE headquarters followed ICE's surreptitious
assaults on 150 people in the Bay Area. The disappeared, it was later
discovered, were whisked away to Stockton in the Central Valley, to keep
them from Bay Area supporters and help.

Earlier, on 15 February in Los Angeles, the "Koreatown Collective" led a
protest, also with the slogan "Shut Down ICE!" They surrounded and
immobilized an ICE van in front of the Metropolitan Detention Center there.

One final note: Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf gave a press conference before
the ICE raids, giving a warning that they were coming. The ICE fuhrer
Thomas Homan then compared Schaaf "to a gang lookout who tells people
when a police car is arriving. Homan said the Justice Department is looking
into whether Schaaf obstructed justice." (Time magazine). Honan said that
800 "criminals" avoided arrest because of her.

Seems like we dodged a bullet when De Blasio's pick for Chancellor,
Alberto Carvalho, spectacularly backed out of the job, on live TV.
The guy was full of himself and pro-charter, and had been recommended by
Charter maven Eva Moskowitz. Carvalho was also a recipient of the Eli Broad
foundation award (Broad being one of the big-time charter promoter and
teacher-union-busters who was gonna pay for "merit pay" in NYC -- to our

Carvalho, it should be said, was a strong advocate of defending immigrant
children,harking to his own experience as an undocumented, and for a time,
homeless, immigrant teenager. But mainly he wanted to highlight his own
success in an extraordinarily narcissistic display,
Why did de Blasio pick Carvalho in the first place, one might ask. It
shouldn't be forgotten that the mayor was a Clinton man and Hillary
(former lawyer for and board member of Wal-Mart, of the Walton Family) was
a big fan of Eli Board.
The whole circus is an indictment of mayoral control of the schools
introduced by billionaire Bloomberg and a his factotum Joel Klein.
As for de Blasio, we in the Class Struggle Education Workers said he
would be "Bloomberg lite" -- a mayor who has caved on opposing charter
schools, and completely abandoned the homeless population which includes a
whopping 10 percent of NYC students, or 100,000 school kids over the course
of the year.
Down with Mayoral Control ! For teacher-student-parent- worker control of
schools! Keep I.C.E.Out-- Make the Schools a Sanctuary for Immigrants,
their Parents and All Students! Workers Mobilizations to Stop Deportations!
