Interesting interview in today's NY Times with Betty Pringle, the
African-American woman who is president of the NEA (actually the biggest
teachers' union, but it is overwhelmingly suburban and midwestern. She is
a straight-line Biden- Democrat. She was interviewed as she was talking to
students at Philadelphia High School for Girls (where I went to high
school). The Masterson school is now in the building where Girls High was,
and Girls High is in another building.
Ms. Pringle confirmed stories I have heard from a number of black students
over the years about how the very "proper" elite Girls High admin and
counselors used to steer black students away from the Ivy League schools
like Penn, and into the heavily-black teachers'' colleges like Cheney State.
Read the last two paragraphs as Ms. Pringle speaks about how she was
steered away from the math and science classes as "too difficult" for her.
Luckily, when her father heard about it, he marched right back to the
principal's office demanding his daughter be given access to all classes.
Fast forward -- she became a science teacher, taught science for 30 years
and is now president of the NEA.
