Subject: Major late pay issue at Hunter (and elsewhere at CUNY too?) - need any
information people have
Dear CUNY contingents:
News has reached us of a very serious situation at Hunter College that may also
be the case at other CUNY colleges. While details are very partial and need to
be confirmed, this is the picture we have at this point:
A significant number of adjuncts appear to be in serious danger of being paid
weeks late, in the midst of the current crisis.
In the immediate sense this is reportedly because academic units (departments,
etc.) have been missing about 40% to 50% of money needed. Needed cash has
reportedly only been put in departments' accounts in the last 24 hours. In the
absence of a CUNY budget, money is being given out to the colleges on a
month-to-month basis. This may manifest in some adjuncts' hiring not going
through yet on the Adjunct Employee Management System (AEMS). Apparently in
such cases, being put on Blackboard may also be affected.
As always, CUNY's two-tier (multi-tier) labor system means those on the bottom
are being most affected, according to information received.
Please write to the CCU at cunycontingents@xxxxxxxxx with any information you
have on this situation, whether it affects you personally or people you know,
information you may have received from your department, etc. We and all union
members, as part of our common collective struggle, need this information as
part of organizing to stop and reverse this outrageous situation, as well as
all layoffs and cuts. This includes fighting even for such elementary crucial
things as Pay the adjuncts, now and Open CUNY's books so we can all know what
is going on.

Sándor John
