To be fair, a lot of the folks that set up the UN were disappointed in it
almost right away (e.g. CIA's Cord Meyer, IIRC)

Not a lot of country's respect this human right, especially the bigger and
more aggressive nations. A lot of wars and military interventions lately
have occurred without consuilting the UN Security Council, and aggression
has been carried out without permission being granted, or UN Resolutions
being deliberaty stretched and twisted when such permission or authority
for such military intervention has been refused. Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan,
Syria, Ukraine and many other countries in the Middle East and around the
world come to mind as victims. A nation's perceived foreign economic and
political interests are subordinated to selfishness, and short-termism,
rather than resolving conflicts through peaceful resolution and
compromise...but there you are, capitalism in all its forms is aggressive
and self-serving, and mutual help and co-operation tend to take a back
seat...especially when it comes to arms sales, making a profit at others
expense and "pulling more than one's weight" is more important than trading
and negotiating as equals.
The United Nations, which was set up by the winning powers after the 2nd
world war, to prevent such events and horrors occuring again, such as
fascism in Germany, by providing an international forum for conflict
resolution, seems unable or inept at preventing such recurrences in todays
world. Drones are another example, where there is no legal jurisdiction or
reasoning given over who or what is attacked by those who own, manage and
deploy them.
