see full article...I remember that during the Cold War era scientists
and academics were discouraged or forbidden from fraternising with the
government designated "enemy" in case they were brainwashed or used as
unwitting or witting partners with the enemies of western democracy.
This even extended to book fairs held in communist led countries...where
all the legitimate import/export companies used to meet up for trade and
making deals. The trouble is that if there is no fraternisation between
scientists and academics or even tourists to each others countries, then
no one really learns what is going on in each others nation states, so
our own and each others governments can then say that we are all enemies
of one another...without providing any particular proofs or evidence.
We either become insular and become subject to misunderstandings and
misleading propoganda by our own governments, or we mix with peoples of
other nation states and learn from each other. I prefer the
latter...mixing and meeting with people of other nations is good for
us. We are all diplomats at the end of the day...😉

Britain’s real-life Q Branch is among sensitive government agencies
funding academics with close ties to China’s military bodies, The Times
can reveal.
Professor Yulong Ding, at the University of Birmingham, is working on a
£1.8 million energy security project funded by Her Majesty’s Government
Communications Centre, known as the Q Branch in the James Bond films,
that makes gadgets for Britain’s spies.
He is also a visiting professor at two Chinese universities believed to
have links to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and China’s
intelligence agencies.
The centre also funded a second academic to work on a laser technology
project. The researcher had studied at a Chinese university that has a
formal partnership with the PLA Air Force.

The Times can also reveal that Porton Down funded research for seven
senior academics, all of whom have studied at or worked at Chinese
universities known as the Seven Sons of National Defence because of
their links to the PLA and the intelligence services.
