Coronavirus latest news: 'Mixed messages' from MPs on face masks a
concern
Boris Johnson is poised to confirm that Freedom Day will go ahead as
planned - but is expected to face a backlash over the prospect of
millions having to self-isolate because of the NHS Covid app.
From July 19, all legal Covid regulations are expected to be dropped,
but concerns have arisen that government messaging will curb people’s
ability to take advantage of some freedoms again.
Edward Argar, the health minister, insisted there was no shift in stance
towards issues such as face masks, which would be a matter of "common
courtesy".
He told Radio 4's Today programme: "It's about making a sensible and
informed judgment base on the circumstances. The guidance will add more
to that, to give people more clarity."
But he rejected the suggestion by Iain Duncan Smith that the
guidance-led approach would lead to confusion and conflict, saying: "I
don't think the British people will struggle to look at the guidance
and form their own common sense judgments. I don't think it will
introduce confusion."
He confirmed the intention was to "give responsibility back to
businesses and individuals to make personal judgment", emphasising the "
innate common sense of the British people".
