The Chagos Islanders were kicked off their island by the UK government
to make way for a US military base. They have lost appeal after
appeal. The latest case concerns the admissibility of a US government
leaked document which shows that the creation of a marine conservation
scheme to protect the little fishes and marine life, was in fact a load
of ole baloney, and was meant to make sure that the Chagos islanders, if
they ever do get their island back, would not be able to fish for a
living, as they have always done in the past, so making it more
difficult to return to and island which has been there since time
immemorial.
It just goes to show the duplicity of the US government and its use of
powers to pretend that they are protecting the environment, when really
it is about keeping a military base there and preventing the local
population from getting their land back.
