Interesting situation developing in Spain. The Regional government of
Catalonia decided to hold a referendum on independence from Spain.
The Spanish government has deemed it unconstitutional as has its
court. The Regional government have decided to hold one anyway, the
campaign starts on Thursday, and the vote will be held on October the
1st. The Central government is doing its darnedest to prevent it from
happening, and has ordered the arrest of any Catalonian state official
who spends any government money and to be prosecuted for using
government money illegally, as well as threatening to use force and
send in the Armed Forces and take stronger measures to try and preven
it occuring. Ever since the fall of the Spanish dictatorship the
people of Spain have been unable to agree on the words of their
national anthem, so all one hears is the music at international
official gatherings.
Very little world media publicity about the situation, particularly in
the UK. I dare say that the UK establishment are a bit sensitive to
the situation and don't really want to talk about it due to the
implications for Brexit and the national independence movements in
Scotland and Wales...
