Dear Critical Development Studies Network members,
Many of you will be aware that a Development Studies Association of Australia
has recently been formed and will be launched on 12 June in Melbourne, with an
AGM. The formation of this Association has been a huge effort on the part of
its champions, who have kindly involved Rebecca Monson and I, as
representatives of our Critical Development Studies Network, in this process.
Our stance is that there is space and need for both our Network and the
Association, and accordingly we share with you their call for members, below.
Our Network will remain separate from the Association in an effort to maintain
the space for radical critique of development, but of course many of you will
find a home in both groups and we are excited about the possibilities of
dialogue with this new Association.

Australia
Dear Colleagues
We are very pleased to announce the incorporation of the Development Studies
Association of Australia (DSAA) in March, 2019. The DSAA represents
researchers, scholars and practitioners engaged in research, teaching, and
training in the field of Development Studies. Please see our website to learn

We hope that you will join us by becoming a member of the DSAA. Membership
benefits include regular events for networking, discounts for conferences,
access to shared teaching resources, and regular updates with information on
opportunities relevant to the field, and much more. Most importantly, in the
first year of the Association, members will have the opportunity to steer the
direction of the DSAA and build an association that works for its members.
Membership rates vary from $50 a year for students, to $190 for a two-year
membership for salaried academics. There are discounts for unsalaried and low
income members, and Institutional membership is also available. Membership
information is available at the above website, and we will soon be opening the
online membership payment system.
New members are invited to our first Annual General Meeting, to be held in

accepted from 14 to 28 May 2019 inclusive.

Survey Monkey. Votes by electronic proxy will be opened from 1 June to 11 June.
Please note that due to the delay in getting the membership payment scheme up
and running, nominees do not have to be paid-up member at the time of

Nomination Form for Office Bearers in the DSAA Executive Committee
2019 to 2021
The following (2 year) positions on the Development Studies Association of
Australia (SASAA) Executive Committee will be open for election at the first
DSAA Annual General Meeting, 12 June 2019. In order to qualify for nomination a
person must be a current financial memberof DSAA at the time of the election. A
current financial member of DSAA can nominate someone with their consent, or
alternatively, members can self-nominate.
The Committee consists of between 8 to 10 members including:
1. President
2. Vice-President
3. Secretary
4. Treasurer
5. Student Representative
6. Development Professional
7. Ordinary members
Nominations are accepted from 13 to 28 May 2019 inclusive.
Voting will take place at the AGM on June 12, and by electronic proxy via
Survey Monkey. Votes by electronic proxy will be open from 1 June to 11 June.
Please refer to the DSAA General rules for details of eligibility and the rules
governing elections, and the responsibilities of elected members (Part 5, [link

In nominating candidates, and in the preparation of a supporting statement, we
remind members of the DSAA’s Executive Committee Election Diversity Policy (as
stated below). This policy will also be communicated on the electronic ballot.
In constituting the Committee, the Development Studies Association of Australia
may take into consideration the following policy in electing Committee members:
a. Ensure gender equity and diversity, with no more than 60% of a
particular gender
b. Ensure that membership of the board is decentralised, and that a minimum
of four universities are represented on the board
c. Ensure at least 3 Australian states and territories and a diversity of
academic disciplines represented on the board
d. Aim to ensure that one half of the Committee members continue for a
second term
e. Aim to ensure that there is no more than one Committee member from each
university or institution
f. Aim to ensure Indigenous representation
