Hi Keith,
I model two periods: early 1940s and the 1980s. I tried to have all my
immoveable structures such as tunnel portals and bridges look like they were
built before the 1930's, but due to double stacks and tri-level auto carriers
I
have had to modernize tunnel portals and rebuild through truss bridges. If I
were ever to build again I would always have at least 110 scale feet of
tangent track approach any portal(tunnel or bridge) Roger's article would
have
indeed been very helpful to me 25 years ago. For those of you in our group
who build model layouts or plan to do so,look at Roger's article in Keiths
link. It is well worth your time.
My minimum radius in N scale is 18 inches on the main line and most of my
curves are 20 inches. These are considered broad curves for model
railroading,
but are very tight curves for the prototype. We modelers frequently forget
that. Placement for tunnel portals and bridges should take the above into
consideration.
Best Regards,
Rick Spano
