CP had 15 River cars and converted 13 of them into the "Cape" series during
WWII. These had 4 bedrooms and one compartment, with the lounge and solarium
basically unchanged. These covered one section of the Dominion with several
cars left over for other assignments. (The other two River cars were rebuilt as
cafe-parlor solariums.) The other section of the Dominion used steel "Mount"
cars (3 compartments & 1 drawing room) with the open platforms rebuilt to
closed observation rooms. The Mountaineer used a variety of Pullman observation
cars postwar until 1954:
1947 3 Cpt, 2 DR
1951-2 2 Cpt, 1 DR
1954 1 Single Bedroom, 1 DR
In 1955 CP began supplying the Mountaineer with Cape cars, transferred from the
Dominion which now had Park dome-observations. Cape cars remained on the
Mountaineer and Soo Dominion until 1961, the last year of operation via Portal.
In 1961 these are shown as going only St Paul to Banff. From 1962 to 1964 the
service was run via Winnipeg as part of the Dominion which had a "Park"
observation, and no separate observation is shown running from St Paul. I don't
know whether an observation car was added on days when the St. Paul cars had to
run as a separate section west of Winnipeg.

Rob,
The Soo Line never replaced the cars. After WWII they continued to
contract for Pullman 8-1-2 sleepers for the train (as did CP) and
continued to supply the diners for the eastern end of the run, but the
lounge car seems to have become CP's responsibility.
The four Soo "River series" cars were functionally the same as the
CP's "River" cars, and both were used on the Mountaineer, which
required either seven or eight (I forget which) compleete consists. I
seem to recall that CP rebuilt their River cars into something else
after WWII.
I thought that someone on this lists said thay had consists for the
post WWII Mountaineer?
