If they still have cabs then would still be considered as A units, even if they are used only as trailing units. Just like the dozens of SD40-2's that ran for many years with their cab windows painted out. They have the ability to be restored to A unit status relatively easily.

Charlie, the units in question were class DRF-30 and
model SD40-2, no sub class and no model change as a
result of removal of cab appurtenances.
