Although most shots I've seen are of the left side, there appears
to be at least one exception to the raised running board feature on
the 8500 series. See

Mike,
I believe that you are correct in your message. One other difference
between the two groups of RS-10's is that the 8500's have a raised
section of running board immediatly in front of the cab on the RIGHT
(engineers) side. The 8400's do not have this particular feature. All
other running board features are the same. I discovered this after
having an old Alco Models RS-10 converted to an 8400 series complete
with the proper headlights. Oh well......
