During the 1950's when I was a brakeman on the Bruce Division, the 2838,

My favorite was the 2839, When these engines had their mileage in on
Passenger, they would put them on freight for a bit then send them to
Montreal for a total re fit. Before putting them back on Passenger, we would
break then in on freight again. It was a real dream for a young guy to ride
these engines pulling rated tonnage up Tottenham Hill. The exhaust stroke
when in the short position, nearing the top of the hil,l sounded like a
cannon being fired every second. I never ever witnessed such raw power before
or since.
