quote from Lewis' book I thought, OK which is the right side?
After going to the book I determined, from the caption, that the
bell placement is below the F on the frame on the engineer's side.
The question then arises, where is the bell placement on the RS-10/
RS-10S?

I started doing some research when I heard about the bell being on
the long hood. I used various photos and publications to look for the
correct bell placement.
I couldn't find any photos of RS-10's with a bell at either end.
There are many photos of RS-18's with bells on the short hood, but I
discovered something in "Rail Canada Volume 3" (Donald C. Lewis).
On page 119 it says that RS-18 #8741 had the bell mounted out of
sight on the frame right behind the right front step. Life-Like's is
numbering their first run of RS-18's as #8729 and #8743.
#8729 to #8748 were all part of the same order number(4804) built
between 03/57 and 06/57. All the photos I have seen confirm that
there was no bell on either the long hood or the short hood on any of
these engines. The same goes for ALL of the RS-10 production.
It probably wasn't until RS-18 #8749 built 03/58 (order number 4807)
that they started installing the bell on the short hood. All the
photos that I've seen of #8749 to #8800 seem to confirm this.
SO...... I guess you'll have to remove the bell entirely if you want
to be "prototypical".
Does anyone have any evidence to show otherwise?

They tell me that these are the FINAL versions and the soon to
be released production models will be exactly the same.
So it appears that the bell will be on the long hood on CP '18's
hence will need to be removed, painted gray and reinstalled on the
short hood.
