Just one comment from my own observations Roger - the Pullman company had air conditioned cars with the aid conditioning ducted outside the original clerestory roof (in the bulges you can see in the photo). CPR cars ducted internally, without the bulges (at least as a general rule). So I have little doubt those are Pullmans.

I was hoping to find a Life Mag. story on the train, but nothing so far.

Nice shot, Rob!!  Thanks for posting.

The location is the Kicking Horse River Bridge on the Mountain Sub at
milepost 32.6 (2.4 miles east of Golden).  Based on the high mid-day
sun angle and the height of the river, I'd say it is likely very late
Spring or early Summer 1941.

Based on Table 7 of the June 29 passenger timetable that year, the
train could be The Mountaineer No 14, The Dominion No 4, The Dominion
No 8, or a following section of one of those trains.  Those trains
left Golden at 11:20, 12:25, and 13:07 PST, respectively.

Would the lack of baggage-mail cars not suggest The Mountaineer, or
perhaps following sections of one of The Dominions?  Do we know which
train(s) normally operated with a combination-type car behind the
engine?  Are we sure about the Pullman cars?  Did tour groups bring
Pullmans during the war?  So many questions.

The other delightful Peter Stackpole Life Magazine CPR shot, of the
woman climbing (down from) the T1b Selkirk, appears to be taken at
Field.  I base this on the tree shadows on the tender, consistent with
those at the old depot area.  The engine is eastbound, probably with
the same train as seen in the bridge shot.

I too will be interested to hear more comments on the train consist as
seen in the Kicking Horse River Bridge photo.

I've been cruising through the life magazine photo collection and
found this photo. My guess (based on a BC mountains location) and the
Pullman cars is that this is the Mountaineer (a few weeks earlier or
later I suppose the Soo Dominion is possible, but with that many
Pullman cars? I doubt that.) I'm interested in hearing an any comments
about what is evident here and the identification of cars in the
consist, etc. Not a troop train, right?
