You are correct. The fuel tank is indeed under the cab. The fuel filler
sticks out from the back of the cab on the engineer's side. Also, the sight
glass was behind a little door near the filler neck. I remember fuelling these
units 30 years ago ...
Some of the high number S-4's got additional fuel tanks for higher capacity.
They were mounted ahead of the cab on top of the running board on both sides of
the unit. This raised the fuel capacity from 500 gal. to 900 gal. Units
7109-7118 were modified this way by CPR.

Subject: [cpsig] MLW S-4 Fuel tank location.
Was the fuel tank for "S" series MLW switchers located above the frame and
under the cab? The cab floor being the top of the fuel tank?
I think it was but I'm not 100% certain.
