I don't have those books but it sounds like these are the series of cars
built in 1890/06 and 1902/07 by Hochelaga shops. Their original numbers
were 514-517. Car 517 was built in 1902/07. The rest were built 1890/06.
They were renumbered 80-83 in 1907/04. Cars 80 and 81 were assigned to the
E&N in 1909/08 and then sold to Western Fuel Co. in 1916. Cars 82 and 83
were renumbered 1895 and 1896 in 1912/04. They were scrapped 1935/12 and
1920/02 respectively.
According to my records I may have folios for these cars. I will go through
my scanning backlog tonight and see if I actually have them. If I have
them, I'll try to get them onto the Library website sometime this week.

These cars get more interesting by the day.
Apparently there were two types of the mountain observation cars with
cupolas. The 84, 85, and 86 are the type with the parlor seats
and the elevated
seats in the center of car, in line with the center sill, and
with the glassed in
roof. The photos in West of the Great Divide show this car and
they seem to
match the equipment folio in the cpsig documents site. (Thank you Mr.

The second type of car is more flat roofed and has no glass over
the center
section. See From Summit to Sea by George H. Buck p. 57 and The
Domeliners by
Patrick C. Dorin p. 18 and is numbered 517.
The first type of car mentioned above has side windows that go to
the roof
line and the second car has the normal windows. The letterboard
is therefore
limited to the area from the windows to the end of the car on the
first type and
extends the length of the car on the second. The ends and
underframe/trucks
look the same for both cars.
Does anyone know if these were in fact two different series of cars or
possibly a rebuild. According to Buck these were removed from
service by 1913 and
saw service on the E&N .
