The current rate for the signature circle tour on the Royal Canadian Pacific is
$6600 Cdn based on double occupancy, and in my opinion it is money well spent.
I have had the opportunity to travel aboard this train on a few occasions and
it is, in a word, breathtaking.
The train originally operated with FP7A 1400, FP9A 1401, and FP9B 1900. The
1400 has unfortunately been out of service for nearly two years, requiring over
100K worth of repairs to bring her up to standard. 1401 is apparently running
on borrowed time as well, but has seen sporadic duty this year. The 1900 was
thought to have serious radiator problems and was given up by the RCP team
earlier this summer. The 2816 group promptly jumped on the opportunity and
snapped her up. The repairs actually turned out to be relatively minor and the
unit has been running all season long with very few problems. Although she
technically belongs to the steam team now, she is still doing duty on the RCP
run until a suitable replacement can be found. GP38-2 3084, originally
intended as protection power, seems to have become a permanent fixture.

What you saw is what CP advertized as the "royal Canadian Pacific"
(I believe that name is correct). This is a luxury excursion
train that CP operates, usually on a loop from Calgary to Golden,
then south to Fort Steele, eats to Lethbridge and finally north
again to Calgary. This is a "deep pockets" train - if you have to
ask how much it costs, you probably can't afford it. The train
only runs in daylight and is tucked away is a sidind got the
evening meal and the overnight. In addition to the 2 units you
saw (GP38-2 3084 & F9B 1900) CP also has a two F9As - 1400 & 1401
which are usuially on the head end. You can find out more about
the train on CP's own web site.

Subject: [cpsig] CPR Train Observed
While on vacation in Albera this past summer, we saw a rather
unique
CPR train. I figure this is the best place to ask about it.
The observation occured on the CP mainline near Canmore, Alberta
in
early September. The train was eastbound and had on the head
end
what I believe was a GP38-2 followed by a FP7 or 9 'B' unit.
The
rolling stock contained normal passenger cars circa 1950-60 and
a
couple of older cars with clarestary roofs. The tail end car
had a
open-air platform on the rear. All of the equipment was painted
in
the Tuscan red and gray paint scheme.
Any info. on this train would be appreciated.
