CP or its agent would have needed government authority to affix a stamp to a
passport. The company may have been vouching for the immigrant in some way,
possibly that his inland passage was paid; he had a homestead arranged; a
firm job offer; or some other similar provision; which would clear him
through some stages of immigration inspection at the port of entry.
It would be useful to know what the stamp says.
