Subject: Re: [cpsig] Alco/MLW early paint schemes

The early diesel switchers were painted black. The one at heritage park in
Calgary is in the correct scheme as far as I know, it certainly matches
photos taken in that time period. Just when they changed schemes I do not
know, but I believe there were three basic schemes. The black one, the one
with the nose "beard" and then the tuscan and gray. Just remember every
locomotive in an order was most likely painted the same. It was very rare to
paint half an order one way and the other half a different way. Repaints are
another matter. If they initiated new schemes too frequently it is quite
possible for a locomotive to go from scheme 1 to scheme 3 and never appear
in scheme 2. Then depending upon your perspective some people might consider
a minor variation as a totally new scheme, others might not.

I was gratified that Ray Matthews had early photos of the SW9's
and hopefully he and others may be able to provide some answers
to my questions. First, as regards S-2 7010-7064, it's been
difficult finding photos of this group in the Tuscan/Yellow and
black lettering (B2) scheme. I've come across only 6 so far but
expect others were so painted before going to the Tuscan/Grey
with block lettering (C3) scheme, those being 7010, 7012, 7013,
7015, 7034 and 7039.

Second, the MLW S-4's 7099-7108 were delivered in 06 & 07 of 1949
prior to the last three Alco S-2's in 08/49. In Leslie Ehrlich's
fine article in 'CP Tracks 8-3' he asserts that the S-4's were
delivered in Tuscan/Grey. Can someone confirm either way.

Finally, the MLW RS-2's 8405-8408 were delivered in 04/50 but in
what paint scheme? The stencil on the CPHA website suggests they
were painted the same as the Alcos. Help!
