Looking at the Walt Frost photos in CVA, Walt shot 2863 with the teardrop stack
on 1940Oct14 and again on 1949Sept09. By 1951Oct21 for the Royal Train, it was
a flanged stack. That said, I recognize that not all of Walt’s photos are
properly captioned.

Subject: [cpsig] 2863 stack change date?
This question starts with an assumption: that all the H1e Hudsons in the 286X
series started out with the tear drop shaped stacks? Right/wrong? Anyhow,
wondering when the 2863 went to the elongated straight stack with top flange.
I have internet copies of images dated in to the early 50s, and one poor image
marked either “1940s” or “1940”. They all show the elongated straight stack.
But I don’t completely trust the 1940 date on the one image, so really have no
evidence about when the later stack was changed in.
Does anyone have an idea when the stack would have changed? I’m most
interested in how the loco was equipped in 1946, so bracketing that date would
be sufficient for my needs.
Thanks in advance,
Rob Kirkham
