Doug, thank you so much! That's exactly the info I'm looking for. Thanks also
to Rob
Kirkham for the link.
So far I have one light Mikado and one Consolidation that are receiving
vestibule cab
conversions, plus a couple of Alco S2s. (And an FP7 A-B-A consist for pulling
the
Canadian). This gives me the guidance I need to create a good representative
roster.
Thanks again!
cheers

Here is a rough total of all engines built since 1900 except for a couple of
shays, two
Lavallee. Some libraries have it.
0-6-0 = 206 (nearly all gone by 1950)
0-8-0 = 64 (some from 2-8-0s)
0-10-0 = 3
2-8-0 = 454 (many scrapped or rebuilt into 2-8-2s by 1950)
2-8-2 = 334 (light and heavy)
2-10-0 = 41
2-10-2 = 15 (all used in the mountains)
2-10-4 = 36 (all used in the mountains)
4-4-4 = 25 (two types)
4-6-0 = 675
4-6-2 = 498 (several types from light to heavy)
4-6-4 = 65
4-8-2 = 2
4-8-4 = 2
These numbers came from "Guide to North American Steam locomotives" (Kalmbach)
If you want more detail, the best book is "Canadian Pacific Steam
Locomotives" by Omer
Mikados, a Hudson,
A representative CP steam roster for Ontario in the 1950s might include
Pacifics,
ten wheelers and consolidations. Switching might be handled by a steamer orexact
Alco S2.

Subject: [cpsig] Transition era steam rosters?
Hi all
I'm looking to get a general sense of CP's steam roster during the 1950s. I
do not need
numbers or dispositions, or dates, but rather want to get an idea of themodel
proportionate
numbers of each type of locomotive, in order to build up a similarly
proportioned
roster.
My pike is set in southern Ontario and is almost entirely freight
operations.
If anyone can direct me to a source for this information, I would greatly
appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.
