Yesterday on the History Channels "Cities Underworld" series the program
featured New York. Underneath one of the hotels (the Waldorf I think) there
is a unused subway station. There is an old railroad baggage car sitting
there on one of the tracks and has been there since supposedly the end of the
second world war. Apparantely is was used on some of FDR's trains. It is
armour plated and has bullet proof windows. They specifically mentioned the
extra heavy duty trucks. The car was used to transport FDR's automobile. I
wonder if this car was on the Birch Island trip?

Don't believe everything you see on TV :-) People who know a bit more about the
subject than those who produced the show have commented on other lists that it
is simply a former NYC baggage car, in company service, storing blocking and
such in case of minor derailments. The producers of these TV shows want to
sensationalize EVERYTHING, and have mixed the story that FDR MIGHT have used
the lift outside the Waldorf with the fact that the car has rivets (so it must
be armored, right?) and is painted green (so it must be in gov't service) to
fill a half hour of TV with drivel. While really off topic for this list, here
is a link to more factual information:
