Took some time today to do a little train watching, well that is what it
was, little train watching.
On the two hours I was at the junction of the WP line and UP line one train
went south on the WP line, one went west (work train) to I don't know where.
Talked to a fellow Rail Fan who said they were doing tie replacement from
North Sacramento out to Rio Linda and had several trains tied up on the
main. Looks like they also have trains stuck in the canyon (Feather River),
but I can't confirm that. They have put in a new connection from the old WP
line to the old SP line near Marysville so they can run off the WP onto the
SP and go into Roseville. This is delaying traffic for two or more hours
both north and south but it is better than no traffic.
Train 5 the west bound Zephyr is being stopped at Roseville and passengers
bussed to Sacramento, passengers can then catch one of the Cal trains for
the Bay Area. They are doing the same on the east bound trip. Amtrak had to
move car crews up from Oakland to take care of cleaning and maintenance as
UP refused to do that.
The Coast Starlight is running into Sacramento and then going up the WP line
to Marysville, Chico and north, I'll check this out tonight, too bad it
comes through here at 11:30 at night.
Work on the trestle is going on 24/7 and they are making excellent progress
in fact they appear to be ahead of schedule. It is amazing what the
railroads can do when they want too.
