More information relative to the eleven former CN, original CP SD40-2s in the
5300 series. I noted units 5393 and 5398 trailing the 5847 on the 110-car
572-26 out of Shoreham late this PM. Interesting to note that neither of the
5300s was equipped with number boards and the 5398 had "non-equipped cab"
stenciled on the engineer's side of the cab. So, it appears that once again,
we have a dedicated fleet of booster units on CP (like the old Helm and ex-NS
sheet metal cabbed SD40/40-2s).
This appears to force CP to operate three unit sets of SD40-2s on selected
long haul trains, which almost equals the performance of a pair of the
AC4400s (except for extra stops for fueling!) Speaking of GEs, I presume the
recently announced order for 51 units supersedes the reported order for 40
announced midsummer. CP's publicity release stated they will now have 381
such units (the math should be 316 GEs, 61 SD90/43MACs and the four true
SD90MACs). If this supposition is correct, can we conclude that the new
units will be numbered 8581-8631?
