Hi Dick

Can you please pass this message on to the list for me?

Post re some information on the CPR passenger coaches that
were used on the E&N subsidiary between WW1 and the end of passenger
trains when the CPR switched over to the Budd RDC's. Thanks
 Bill

E&N passenger cars WWI to Sept 1955:

WWI to early 1930's the E&N ran wood, truss-rod, passenger cars with open
platforms (no vestibules) and most were lettered Esquimalt & Nanaimo; best
source is a combination of the "A Century of Deluxe Railway Cars in Canada"
for text and some pictures from the BC Archives.  Anyone who finds many
pictures could they please let Dave Manzer know. Detail specifications are
available in the MP 14's that are rosters of all Company equipment. Several
have been posted on the CP Sig Document Project.

1930's to September 1955 the E&N ran 'Kettle Valley Cars' in terms of the
coaches, baggage and mail. These coaches were wood cars with truss-rods,
some with steel under frame although most pictures show both the truss-rods
and the heavier centre steel supports. They had vestibules. There were 2
different Parlor cars used on the E&N during this period; the Malahat and
the Qualicum. Photos of the Malahat are in "Vancouver Island Railroads",
"More Classic Trains" and the BC Archives. There is one photo of the
Qualicum in "From Abbey to Zorra via Bagdad"

There is an unconfirmed hypothesis that when the steel cars were put on the
Kettle Valley runs circa early 1930's then the wood cars that used to run
on the Kettle Valley passenger runs were moved over to the Island. These
vestibule cars bumped the open platform cars into Company (Work) Service.
The best source for information is the classic W. Gib. Kennedy article in
Model Railroader entitled the "Kettle Valley Cars".  Be advised that the
x-KVR sleeper was never to my knowledge used on the Island and the
Parlor/Observation is only a close approximation to the Malahat/Qualicum.
These cars were mostly lettered Canadian Pacific.

I have received several photos of E&N passenger cars from this period from
Gib's son Gord Kennedy. I believe he is still selling scans from his Dad's
collection. Robert D. Turner's "Vancouver Island Railroads" and "West of
the Great Divide" has a number of John Newman photos of the passenger
trains.  BC Archives also has a number of shots of engines in passenger
service.  These shots allow the viewer to see interesting detail further
back in the train.

Photo sources for these cars are largely Stan Styles and Wilbur Whittaker.
Prints are available for purchase from GTC (Gary Oliver) and Railway
Memories (Dave Shaw) who sell directly and often attend train shows.  If
contact information is required please advise.

Typical consist for E&N passenger (Victoria to Parksville) 1946's to 1949
was a steamer or 1949-1955 Baldwin DRS-4-4-1000 (Diesel) with often a
passenger equipped reefer; then a x-KVR RPO, then 2 x-KVR baggage cars; then
either 2 x-KVR coaches or 1 x-KVR coach and either the Malahat or the
Qualicum.

There was considerable shuffling of cars at Parksville to vary the consist
appropriately for the Parksville to Port Alberni and Parksville to Courtenay
runs. Depending on which run the modeler is trying to replicate they will
need to vary the cars that are included in the passenger train. Basically
the baggage cars split at Parksville and some shots show the head end reefer
or boxcar proceeding beyond Parksville but many photos show only the coach
and baggage cars in the consist.

For modeling purposes there are no ready to run plastic cars that can be
used to satisfactorily model these x-KVR wood cars. For the HO modeler with
a substantial budget either brass Kettle Valley cars (several sets been done
by PFM/Van Hobbies) some of the Kirlin produced brass cars will provide nice
models of these cars and Andy W models provide outstanding models for these
passenger cars used during this time period. Once again please note that
the Sleeper in the set wasn't used on the Island and the modeler needs to
decide if the Parlor/Observation in the set is close enough to the
Malahat/Qualicum.

I am willing to share sources of photos and if I receive permission from the
photographer or the person with the collection I will assist people to get
into contact directly in-order to allow them to order their own copies of
prints. I have copies of some MP 14's that I find very useful to research
all company equipment especially the passenger equipment. Copies of the MP
14's are available from men at $8 per issue plus my shipping costs.

I am in the process of developing an annotated bibliography which would be
available upon request no charge
