In older pictures, many 36 foot double sheathed box cars with "reverse
Murphy" steel ends are seen. I'm trying to determine when the steel end
replacement program was started. The cars originally were built with wood
ends as far as I know. Some of these cars (220000-220999) were built in
1923-1928 era so it is possible some where built with steel ends. Earlier
cars were also rebuilt, some of the later rebuilt ones got dreadnaught ends.
Beside trying to determine when steel ends began to appear on CP cars, the
other reason for this research is to try to verify the year of a
photo. The photo, from the BC Archives, is found
at: <http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/BC-InterioRR/>. The photo
shows several of these cars plus Fowler box cars beside the sternwheeler
S.S.Slocan at Rosebery BC. The ship was retired in 1928. Near the barge
is the tug S.S.Sandon retired in 1927. This puts the photo prior to
1928. The loco was assigned to the Kettle Valley Ry 1916 to 1926. This
would appear to date the photo as either 1926 or 1927.
Any info on the use of the steel ends on CP 36 foot wooden or composite box
car fleet would be appreciated.
