The Calgary Rail Prototype Modellers Meet is a gathering attended by
prototype modelers and railroad
historians to display, discuss and enjoy highly informative clinics
on related topics.
Modellers are invited to display and discuss their recent
prototypical modeling projects. The Calgary Prototype
Modellers Meet welcomes models of all scales, roads, gauges and
modeling genres, with the stipulation that they
should be modeled after prototype equipment or structures. Prototype
photos, plans, and other documentation is
encouraged to augment one's display. With plenty of display space
available, modelers are encouraged to bring
lots of models. This is a non-judged show environment geared towards
the exchange of ideas and information.
Models that are sill under construction are welcomed and encouraged.
Informal round table discussions of
"What's on my Workbench" will benefit attendees.
Along with the display and clinics, there will a select
representation of manufacturers of Canadian prototype
model kits. Vendors will be present with a wide selection of
photographs of Canadian prototype equipment and
structures. This meeting will provide a special opportunity for
serious modellers to interact with the most
important link to their modeling, the developers and producers of
Canadian prototype modeling needs and
reference materials. This event will provide a good venue for
modellers and manufacturers to get together to
share information and ideas.
Black Cat Decals of Winnipeg will have available a special
commemorative decal set. The decal set will
compliment Russ Pinchbeck's How-To clinic on kitbashing the CGTX "War
Emergency" tank car.
Friends of the Freight Car Diner
Join us Saturday evening at the "Strathmore Station Restaurant and
Pub" for a pay-as-you-go informal "Friends of the
Freight Car" dinner. This railway theme restaurant is a short 25
minute drive east of the meeting venue in
Strathmore, Alberta. Attendees can choose from the full featured
menu. The agenda is informal, allowing those at the
table to take the topics where they will. Topics such as, what
Canadian freight car should be available and how to
convince the appropriate model manufacturer to produce it.
The Extra Gang Display Layout
The Extra Gang will have sections of their excellent showcase display
layout available to provide an environment to
display your rolling stock. This layout provides a quality scene for
your equipment to be photographed by a
photographer that has been selected for the occasion with the
intention of photo coverage in one of the major
magazines.

The Abbeydale Christian Fellowship Church located at milepost 273 of
CN's Three Hills Sub.
Home made pies and a hot lunch will be available on site.
The venue is wheelchair accessible.

Seminars
The central theme of this meet is one that captures the essence of
the discipline of prototype modeling, "Researching
The Prototype". With that, the clinics are to reflect that theme.
Ice Reefers that have Survived in the West: Comparisons and Contrasts
through Photos and Models Brian Pate
Ice reefers are not all the same. Crawling under and over surviving
reefers reveals engineering details that varied with
era and the practices of the railway concerned. Through studies of
CP, CN and NP reefers, this clinic shows the
importance of recording and modelling those details.
Researching Techniques for Success Dan Kirlin
Dan Kirlin will describe his techniques for researching the
prototypical base for his modeling subjects.
Brass Model Upgrades According to Research John Morris
John Morris leads a discussion on his techniques for improving and
upgrading older Canadian brass motive
power and rolling stock.
Canadian Freight Cars of the 1940s and 1950s Stafford Swain
Using a combination of prototype and model freight car photos to
illustrate what should be modelled and what to use
to get there. While tilted to the CNR (and HO scale) the CPR fleet
is also covered.
Modeling of CCF "War Emergency" Tank Car Russ Pinchbeck
Follow along on a in depth presentation that leads you through the
step by step procedure to model a unique
prototype tank car of the classic era as built by Canadian Car &
Foundry.
Canadian Northern Stations Shawn Smith, VP RailAmerica,
Northwest
Region
Shawn Smith will give a slide presentation on Western Canada's
railway depots - both CPR and CN family. He
will then will take the opportunity to talk a bit about the Canadian
Northern Society's station and community
preservation efforts in central Alberta.
CPR's Heritage Programs Jonathan Hanna, CPR Corporate Historian
CPR's corporate historian, Jonathan Hanna, will present a 45-minute
overview of three of the railway's recently-
launched heritage initiatives -- Royal Canadian Pacific, CPR Empress
(steam locomotive 2816), and CPR's
heritage locomotive fleet.
Steam on the Railways of Calgary Donald Bain
Don will show about 40 slides and discuss them. These stem from the
first railway track shot to the arrival of
the first CPR 5900.
Lambton Roundhouse and Engine Facilities - 1960 Jim Little
Built shortly after the turn of the last century, and demolished in
1964 after the new Agincourt yard was opened,
CP's Lambton facility served as Toronto's main freight yard for the
steam era. Through a series of slides taken
just prior to its demolition we'll explore the various details of
the facility for servicing the steam engines!
