That has been my experiance with trying to come up with a good Soo Line color;
adding white to maroon makes... lavender. Yuck! My solution has been to start
with Lehigh Valley Cornell Red, which is a rather redish magenta color, and
then tone it down with black, to taste. Of course, I'm safe in the knowedge
that at least at some point the Soo was using a rather red color, since I've
seen the sample.
One problem with this is that none of the model paint manufacturers agree on
the proper shade for Cornell red, either :-(
The other problem with trying to tint colors is that any unwanted secondary
color will turn the mix brown. Your kindergarden teacher may have tried to tell
you that all colors mixed together makes black, but it's untrue; unless the
proportions are perfect, they make brown. While It is also true that the Soo
used a browner color in the late fifties / early sixties, that's not the era I
want to model, and so I always need to be careful not to let the mix go brown.
As far as I know the CP color always had a lot of snap and sparkle, and was
never a brown tone, so that's the same problem.
