While Essar Steel (formerly Algoma) in the Sault is suffering from the
current economic woes, but not shut down. Some coil steel still seems
to be moving, but if the Huron Central shuts down, the present pattern
of handing such steel off to CP in Sudbury ends. It has been my
understanding that some/all of the coil steel was destined for a
distribution centre in Hamilton.
Without HC participation, unless it moved through the U.S., that steel
would have to be taken to Oba and then east.
I have no idea what changed when CN took over the Wisconsin Central,
(previously Algoma Central) in the Sault, but the ACR always had
exclusive access to Algoma Steel. CPR received any ASC traffic through
an interchange with the ACR. If CN 'inherited' that exclusiveness and
the freight contract came up for renewal, CN could have decided to
freeze out HC. Alternatively, the apparent deteriorating condition of
the CP owned Soo branch, leased by HC, may have made another contract
with HC impossible.
The HC also serves the Domtar mill at Espanola and although business
is down, it appears to still be worthwhile business, so it is unlikely
that much of the Soo branch would be abandoned.
There are a lot of questions here. Does anyone have more detailed
answers?
