My firm hired me when they had grown to about 30 employees. That was the point
where they felt comfortable hiring a full-time dedicated IT Director. Before
that, they used pay-as-you-go consultants. Now we’re at about 40 people, and
I’m still the only dedicated IT person, and we’ve moved our servers to Azure,
managed by Netgain, which frees me up from some of the daily operational stuff
that I used to manage, and allows me to support the firm more strategically,
proactively developing new IT initiatives, and expand my role in other areas
such as marketing / social media.

Subject: [CPAGeeks] IT staff to user ratio?
I’m curious what the IT staff to user ratio is at other firms? I know there are
many variables here, such as experience level of IT people, whether systems are
stable or changing/in flux, type of end users, use of contractors/outsourcing,
how many offices, how many remote users, how many applications, etc… I think
from my perspective I came up with a 50:1 number, and that is basically where
I’m at here, and I know I’m very busy 😊I’m see ranges online that are all over
the place, I think a common one seemed to be 70:1….that might’ve been from a
Gartner report.
