All About City Council Elections
In less than 100 days, in November, 6 city council seats, including the
mayor, will be up for reelection. If our city decides to elect candidates
that share our vision of an abundant Austin, the range of possibilities are
drastically different than what is currently feasible. That is why this
month, and probably the next several, will be all about elections.
This month we will be having 3 candidate forums, early endorsement
elections for the incumbent candidates, and a D5/D9 candidate happy hour
with the Friends of Zilker Neighborhood Association.
District 9 Virtual Candidate Forum - Aug 11
Back in July we had a District 9 Council Forum, and its was a rousing
success. Unfortunately, just a week before our event 3 candidates entered
the race. On the same day! None of them were able make it, as well as Zo
Qadri who had COVID.
We wanted to give these folks a chance to speak and have decided to hold
another D9 forum. This one will be held online, and we are sourcing
questions from the community, as well as the candidates themselves. If
there’s a question you think we should ask, please send it to zach@xxxxxxxx.

District 3 Council Forum: Aug 17
The district 3 forum will be held at Montopolis Recreation Center on August
17th, 6:30-9:30 PM. We are cohosting along with a coalition of
organizations. It will be focused on Austin’s housing and transportation
issues. Come hear from candidates Jose Valesquez, Daniela Silva, Bertha
Delgado, and Yvonne Weldon.

District 5 Council Forum: Late Aug
The details are still being finalized, but we plan on having a District 5
forum in the last week of August. We will send out a separate email to
inform y’all soon.
Early Endorsement Election: Aug 2-12
This year, AURA has decided to hold an early endorsement vote for the 2
incumbent candidates that are running to keep their seats, Natasha
Harper-Madison in District 1 and Paige Ellis in District 8. This early
endorsement vote will be a simple yes/no vote on each council member. To
gain an early vote from AURA means that we have a high degree of confidence
in their leadership and as such, requires 3/4 approval from the voting
members. To not early endorse does not mean we won't support them, but that
we want to hear from all candidates in that race before making our final
choice.
All dues-paying AURA members who are eligible to vote should have already
received a ballot via email. If you haven’t, please let us know. You can

D5/D9 Candidate Happy Hour: Aug 8
AURA is partnering with Friends of Zilker NA to bring you a candidate happy
hour on August 8th. Join us to enjoy cool drinks, talk politics, and meet
some of the people running to be your city council representative.
