Maine West Kids Make Powerful Pitch

A group of Maine West High School students, all members of the school's
"Voice for the Nameless" organization, mesmerized Des Plaines aldermen, city
officials and about 75 audience members at Monday night's city council
meeting.
Each of the students read prepared statements asking council members to
adopt a city Resolution declaring Des Plaines as a "welcoming environment"
for Syrian refugees. Their words were poignant as they described the
genocide and tragedy that's unfolded in Syria for the last few years. What's
rippled across Europe is the migration of millions of desperate Syrians in
search of a chance to live without the fear of the sudden explosion of
bombs, middle of the night arrests and the incomprehensible decision to risk
everything to get away and to be free and safe.
One-by-one the students stood in front of aldermen, who carefully listened
for almost an hour as they explained their crusade and asked for support.
After their remarks, several inspired elected officials expressed strong
support calling for a city review of the students' request. I knew, however,
that given the political environment we now live in that not everyone was
touched in the same way.
It will be interesting to see if council members follow up on their promise
to meet on this subject and if so, whether they will adopt what the students
are asking for. It may be too hot a potato to handle.
