Good morning and I hope you all are well down there in North Carolina.
I am up in the wilds of New Hampshire where the tomatoes are just
ripening and the nights are turning cool already. Thanks to our list
moderator, Dan Craig, who kindly forwarded me your brief note [below]
expressing frustration about the list. I'm glad you wrote.
If I read you correctly, we share the same feeling and criticism.
Namely that many people, including some Corbett Haiti list members, who
come from all walks of life in the world, are drawn to something they
call "Haiti," but seldom for the same reason. One result is that they
are involved with "Haiti," but seldom with "Haitians."
Dr. Aldy Castor of Haitian Resource Development Foundation
<aldyc@xxxxxxx> <hrdf.org> and I wrote about this [attached] shortly
after the earthquake as a way to focus attention on needs rather than on
interests. In fact, we are compiling all our writings on this for a
larger audience because, after more than ten years, there is still a
problem of focus. Attention to "Haiti" continues to be largely
unproductive, while attention to "Haitians" is more productive in both
theory and practice. At least that's been our experience.
Evidently, you are still a list member. That's good because if you
want, you can reach and focus attention of all the readers on your
orphanage activities and the larger concern for Haitian children. There
are hundreds of readers who are a surprising sample of activist,
academic, professional, journalistic and governmental readers buzzing
around "Haiti" all the time. If you like, I can help you post brief
monthly reports on your orphanage in Limonade. In particular, and
because you can post photos up to a total of about four megabytes, I
have in mind monthly sets of photos from THAKO with good captions,
together in a simple, colorful pdf file. Just let me know, and we can
give it a try, starting now.
Meanwhile, please write anytime. Knowing about your work with
"Haitians," I'm sure you can help resuscitate and reduce the frustration
you expressed in your note this morning.

this list. Why?
How like a cruise ship is this thing called "Haiti." Thousands, no,
millions of passengers pay to come aboard (alas, some are actually born
aboard) but then segregate themselves by deck, size of stateroom, view
of ocean, speed of elevator, distance to dining and access to captain,
with the least necessity or intention of mixing. Yet back home later,
all will equally boast and acknowledge the status of having sailed on
the S.S. Haiti.
This is a triumph of mercantilism. Next week, the ship will change its
name to another country, and the process repeats.
