close to Jean
Brierre and vice versa. Brierre's "suite" of 22 poems written in the
wake of Roumain's untimely death at age 37 is among the most beautiful
of many elegies written by friends. I echo the title of that
collection--Nous garderons le dieu--in the final pages of my
biography.
