Ketsia Saint-Armand ksarmand@xxxxxxxxx Human Rights of Haitian Migrants and their Descendants in the Dominican Republic CAMBRIDGE, MA The Carr Center for Human Rights and David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS) will host a discussion on the right to nationality of migrants descendants in the Dominican Republic with David Baluarte, Bridget Wooding, and Jacqueline Bhabha. The event will be held on Wednesday, April 8 from 3pm to 4:30pm in the Malkin Penthouse in the Littauer Building at the Harvard Kennedy School. Refreshments will be served. Since the constitutional law reform on Sept 23, 2013, the Dominican Republic has effectively removed the right to nationality of tens of thousands of Dominicans of Haitian descent who fail to prove they and their descendants held legal citizenship from 1929 until today. This measure will increase the number of stateless persons from an estimated 40,000 to 200,000. International bodies like the OAS, IACHR, CARICOM, and UNHCR have denounced the measure as discriminatory, xenophobic, and as a clear violation of the internationally recognized human right to a nationality.
