The concept of an application dock is just simply a good idea. Take a
look at the screenshots on windowmaker.org
(http://windowmaker.org/gallery.html) -- mp3 players, clocks, calendars,
system monitors, app launchers, etc., all running in 64x64 icons. It's
just a good UI idea. I don't particularly like the Longhorn hacked-up
implementation, but it's the right idea, at least. The windows "all you
get is a taskbar"/explorer shell is a pretty pathetic UI considering
what's available.
