Take a look at the screenshots on windowmaker.org (http://windowmaker.org/gallery.html) -- mp3 players, clocks, calendars, system monitors, app launchers, etc., all running in 64x64 icons. It's just a good UI idea. I don't particularly like the Longhorn hacked-up implementation, but it's the right idea, at least. The windows "all you get is a taskbar"/explorer shell is a pretty pathetic UI considering what's available.
