Hello Gardeners,
How do you know when your winter squash is ready? Will it ripen more after
you pick it? These are questions we're anxiously asking when we check our
squash daily and contemplate the weather forecast. Next year we'll plant it
earlier!

Here's a link
<https://extension.sdstate.edu/harvesting-and-storing-pumpkins-and-winter-squash>
to
great article from South Dakota State University Extension that answers
those questions and more. I learned that butternut squash turns brown a few
weeks before it's ready to harvest and it tastes best after a few months of
storage. And that squash is sensitive to temperatures below 45 degrees and
really dislikes it below 35. Tonight the forecast is for 39 and 42 for
Friday night.

Fingers crossed!  Hilary
