I haven’t read any of Moulton’s supposed “psychoanalysed” of the Petty girls.
But anyone doing so should know that he had some very unusual ideas as a
psychologist. Some were very much feminism ahead of its time but some of this
was very much wrapped in a whole tapestry of what we now call BDSM, imagery
very prominent in early WW comics in a way that was very, I would say,
misogynist. Moulton also lived an openly polyamourous lifestyle.
Given that we are (IMHO) a hobby dominated by a fairly male-gaze driven look at
the female form, both that context and Moulton’s own ideas should be kept in
mind when reading his analyses of fictional models - especially as actual
analysis doesn’t work that way!!
