As I understand, one of the ongoing problems with the postal service is
that it is required to have pension funds in hands for an enormous
number of decades. Before that, a reasonable amount of money was added
to the fund every year to keep it in excellent shape and to improve the
year-to-year bottom line. Competing services are big donors to
politicians and those politicians have put obstacle after obstacle in
place. Trump's hatred of Jeff Bezos and, let's face it, anyone who
didn't do and say what Trump wanted, amped up the attacks on a
government service that is truly remarkable. The others don't deliver to
every part of the country. They hand over packages to obscure locations
to...you guessed it...the postal service.
The pandemic has put a lot of postal workers out of action for varying
amounts of time and, sadly, some have died. With the manpower shortage
and the absurd destruction of sorting machines, the workers I've spoken
with all knew the slowdown was coming. They don't like it any better
than we do. Even without overtime, some of our local workers finish
their increasingly longer routes every day.
I've contacted my representatives as well, but Ohio Democrats are slow
to enact change in this area and Ohio Republicans don't respond to my
e-mails at all.
The incoming government has a frightening list of things it must do as
soon as possible. I hope the postal service is one of those.
