Steve also followed up Greg Capullo on Marvel's Quasar, and to be honest,
he's one of the few artists that could replace Capullo and get no
complaints from me. Unfortunately, he only lasted an issue and a half, but
the 30 pages of art and 3 total covers he did for the series are
spectacular. He also had an incredible inker in Harry Candelario.
In Quasar's early run with penciler Mike Manley, Marvel included Steve with
Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, and Mike Mignola for covers of the 4-part Journeys
into Mystery,
Steve was extremely approachable and a genuinely nice guy.
He will be missed.

By his own admission, Steve loved Doom Patrol but was disappointed by what
he and Paul did on the title (various factors involved). The art is
beautiful but it's pretty generic in terms of writing. And you can feel by
the art that Steve was less and less into it by issue 5.
His work in LSH was much stronger and reads better. I'd say issue 1 to 25
(he began with 3 and roughly drew 12 of them by 25).
He drew a nice X-Factor one shot (issue 32) which was a fun classic super
hero story and a Flash issue (226) whose art is better than the story but
it's still a very human side of the characters.
He drew (and sometime wrote) many Marvel Comics Presents segments with
Wolverine. The most memorable is the one with Typhoid Mary (written by Ann
Nocenti).
Other than that, his work for Cross Plain comics was sublime: one issue of
Red Sonja, a Werewolf one shot called Wolf's Head, Myth maker and some REH
horror one shot. That's more adult (so to speak).
I'm a Lightle completist and will find that his art elevated any story he
worked on to the point of the worth reading for the storytelling alone
but...(For instance he drew several Spidey/Venom stories during the
Clone/Symbiote era but while absolutely gorgeous, well..., you get the
idea...).

Based only on what I’ve been able to see on the Internet, it seems to me
Lightle’s best work by far is his covers for classic X-Men. They are really
beautiful. Both classic and somehow modern at the same time.
Since I am interested in comics and comic art more for the stories than
the covers and splash pages, re there any books he drew that are well
written and worth reading? (Perhaps his short run on Doom Patrol?)

I can see the similarities with Leach's style. Both artists offer very
precise and meticulous inks. Despite his ties with the legendary Miracleman
run with Alan Moore, I prefer Steve Lightle's art. I find that his sense of
design is superior.

I’m not a cover guy, but that one is a beauty and what you wrote is a
lovely tribute as well as some cool backstory. Thank you for sharing,
Frederic.
I confess I don’t really know Lightle’s work at all. Based on the examples
I’ve seen in the last couple of days I will keep my eye open—he’s good. (I
never was a Legion fan so clearly I missed out there.)
His work reminds me a little bit of Garry Leach, who I think is also
underrated.
Condolences to those who knew him and were friends with him.
