Position Available: Research Assistant, International Program
The Migration Policy Institute (MPI), a nonpartisan, nonprofit think tank
dedicated to the study of U.S. and international migration policies, seeks an
exceptional research assistant to join its International Program in Washington,
DC. MPI’s International Program conducts research and analysis on challenges
facing local, national, and supranational governments, covering topics such as
refugee protection and integration, skills and mobility, border management,
social cohesion in an age of diversity, and the governance of migration. The
research assistant’s primary responsibilities will be to assist with
qualitative and quantitative research and provide programmatic support in
several areas of MPI’s work. Salary and title will be commensurate with
qualifications and experience.
This position is available immediately.
Qualifications:
Required
• Master’s degree with 1-2 years of experience (candidates with a BA with
3-4 years highly relevant work experience will also be considered)
• Strong research skills, including familiarity with immigration
reference materials and datasets
• Proven writing and editing skills (finalists will be asked to complete
an in-person writing and/or editing exercise)
• High motivation and initiative; ability to handle multiple assignments,
prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment; ability to
communicate well and work within a team
• Ability to effectively gather and analyze large volumes of information
through both primary and secondary sources, surveys, and/or fieldwork
• Keen interest in policy and public administration in North America and
Europe.
Preferred
• Experience working with policymakers or international agencies
(including through internships)
• Working knowledge of at least one foreign language
• Expertise in 1-2 European countries, the Middle East, or Africa
• Experience with quantitative analysis.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Conduct qualitative and/or quantitative research and analysis for
diverse audiences
• Contribute to drafting and editing both explanatory and analytical
reports, policy briefs, and other research materials with supervision
• Support senior staff with project management, including drafting
official correspondence and developing project materials as appropriate
• Assist in planning and coordinating public and private events,
including managing invitations, drafting event agendas, and coordinating with
external contributors and partners
