Ten years after the first Global Forum on Remittances and about 15 years into
the attempt to quantify remittance flows, there is no longer any question as to
their importance as a tool for development. The United Nations' Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) have provided a new context both for showing the ways
remittances contribute to combating poverty, and to shedding light on the human
side of these payments that are sent between family members. Though while all
speakers affirm remittances' key role, there is still active and productive
debate in many areas such as where regulators strike a balance between
protection and openness, how ready customers are to move into a "cashless"
world, and where the next opportunities for innovation lie. It was a lively and
informative day.
