This is good news.
It wasn't too long ago there were posts to this group that
sounded like interest in collaborative was dying. Not so. Woody Mosten has
a message that combines self- reflection about our personal values and
strengths, identifying ourselves as peacemakers and how to make money, not
in spite of that but as a result of the energy that unleashes. It's very
relevant and timely and is breathing life back into the movement. I want to
share my appreciation for this with you as I have with Woody. (For context,
I am president of the Oregon Association of Collaborative Professionals
which has sponsored this training, 68 years old and been practicing law for
over 35 years.) This is what I said to Woody:
"I have to say to you, Woody, that you have given me the venue and the
message to complete my life's work. That has been to find a way to merge my
values with my work in a way that people can digest it without feeling
judged or unworthy. I can't thank you enough for that. And that's why it
has been time consuming but really effortless to put this together and have
it sell out with 3 weeks to go in the face of overwhelming odds in this
community. It's all about the inspiration and authenticity of the message
you have created. You are a blessing to the world."
I have been following the development of Woody's message for
years and our organization sponsored 3 people to attend this same training
in Seattle last year. It was life-changing for them. It wasn't easy to
sell in this community but what it took was talking to a cross section of
attorneys about their lives, satisfaction with their work and hopes for
their future. It worked and the platform of having this message to share
was enough to breathe life into this community as well. New practice groups
are forming, local basic collaborative trainings planned, people energized
by the message are offering to serve on our board and even a possible
"Collaborative Summit" is in the works to bring together those of us with
experience and the less experienced to give talks about struggles,
successes, tips, etc.
Here's hoping that other groups are able to hear this message
and that our collective courage is revived.
