On January 1, 2012, I officially became Director of the new Integrative Law
Institute at Commonweal, a nonprofit program whose mission is* "Reclaiming
Law as a Healing Profession."* I will be posting progress reports here
about ILI's growing advisory board and about forthcoming programs.
ILI will offer CLE programs for lawyers, mediators, and judicial officers
in the San Francisco Bay area and in locations around the U.S. and
elsewhere, focusing on "Neuro-Resolution"--practical applications in our
daily professional life of the explosion of new understandings from the
behavioral and cognitive neurosciences about how we humans are wired to
experience, and to resolve, conflicts. ILI will also offer intensive
weekend retreats for lawyers who are ready to re-examine why and how they
are practicing law and to do strategic planning for a re-envisioned
practice that incorporates collaborative and neuro-resolution
understandings and skills.
Many researchers and clinicians are presenting fascinating programs at
conferences that introduce us to discoveries in neuro-economics,
neuro-ethics, attachment theory, cognitive biases, and much more, but it's
not always easy to take that information back to the office and know how to
use it with clients on Monday morning. ILI fills that gap, scanning
journals, blogs, and the media for reports of new research and translating
those discoveries into practical techniques and tools that we can apply
immediately in our work.
Our profession is on the cusp of enormous changes similar to those that
have transformed delivery of medical and healthcare services. Integrative
and complementary medical approaches can now be found at virtually all
major teaching hospitals and many primary care medical practices, and
healthcare professionals now study a broad and ever-expanding range of
continuing education subjects that can improve patient care. The
boundaries that used to separate psychology and neuroscience from concerns
about basic patient care are dissolving, and even internationally renowned
surgeons now work on hospital teams that incorporate the voices of nurses
and aides.
That's what's on the horizon in the legal profession, which faces
unprecedented challenges across the board in legal education and in access
to court-annexed dispute resolution services. *Where there is great
dysfunction, there is also great opportunity for change. * ILI intends to
take a leadership role in helping lawyers to re-envision what it means to
provide dispute and conflict resolution services to individuals whose
professional or personal lives are distressed as a result of conflict with
others.

My collaborative training work continues uninterrupted and is being
greatly enriched by the neuroscience perspectives I'm integrating into not
only intermediate and advanced events, but even basic trainings.
