Please help me compile some information for a research project. Those
listed as receiving copies of this email are presenting a three hour
collaborative law workshop at the national conference of the Association of
Family and Conciliation Courts in San Antonio which is being held April 12th
to 15th in San Antonio. One of our topics will be reporting on data
compiled about customer satisfaction with the process. In October, at the
request of some of those who attended the IACP forum in Vancouver, I posted
to the collablaw site a Client Evaluation Questionnaire in the Files section
under the Research folder. It was based on the American Bar Associations
Family Law Sections suggested survey form published in the Family Advocate.
Some of you have been using it, I know. I have received around 15 responses
from former clients in my collaborative cases and have redacted them and
included them in a master response document that compiles all the
information received to date. If any of you could remove client identifying
information and send me the responses (whether positive or negative) that
you have received, I would be glad to add your data to a national survey
response document and provide it to you for you to pass on to clients if you
wish. I will keep your identity confidential in the compiling of the data.
When you send in a questionnaire response, please let me know if an
interdisciplinary team or neutral allied professionals were used or not and
whether the collaborative lawyers involved (and any other participating
allied professionals) had received any collaborative training. (My
hypothesis is that there will be greater satisfaction in cases where allied
professionals are involved and where the team is trained.) My clients have
always found the responses of others very interesting, but I dont provide
them with others responses until they have returned a survey. I believe
this research will be helpful in getting a sense of how the process has been
experienced by actual participants.
I suggest that you send it to your clients by email, when
possible, to allow them to respond back by email. You could mail it to your
former clients with a stamped return envelope, but you will need to stress
the urgency of getting the information back for the research project. I
always give it out at the closing meeting (or while we are waiting for the
prove up at the court). If they hesitate to fill it out then, I tell them
they may want to put it aside and comment after they have had some time for
reflection. Then I tell them I will send it to them by email and flag it to
email them about once a month to check on their progress in completing it.
That way I have received some very useful information as late as six months
after the case concluded. When possible, my plan is to meet my former
client at Starbucks before work or somewhere for lunch and discuss the
responses to gain more insight. In the one case where I have done this, I
learned much about how to represent clients better in this process. Another
client emailed me on the first anniversary of the divorce with an update of
his thoughts on the process. I may make that part of my protocol: to ask
for an anniversary date report. Remember satisfied clients are your
greatest source of referrals and they love being listened to when no ones
charging them for it.
