I was involved in a case with the same facts. The client continued to
represent himself and the case was resolved. I think that you should just
do what seems reasonable and only be concerned if something in the process
starts to feel "bad" - you know that feeling that you get in your gut when
something just isn't right. You probably have some members of your group
that you trust, or perhaps they have served as mentors in the past. Why not
talk with them and process the situation. You seem to be on the right track
anyway by putting this out there for comment on the list/serve.
Overall I believe that it is a good idea in all cases to be flexible in our
approach. I don't think that protocols can, nor should they try to address
every situation. This is one reason why I believe that protocols should
only be "suggested guidelines". Too much rigidity can stifle creativity -
certainly one of the most exciting aspect of collaborative practice.
